If you thought we didn’t like writing about Canadian punks, then there's a good chance you've never read this here blog. Canada’s ever-growing punk landscape has become a hotbed for varying guttural acts and the sludgy cult leaders (not actually) in Toronto, Ontario’s post-punk, grimed-out outfit HSY ("Hussy") beg for your ears' attention. This four-headed beast has a few splits under their belt, as well as a self-titled 7-inch and their spankin' new, debut full length, Bask, out September 11 on Buzz Records, is completely out of control.If messy, distorted, sludged-up punk tingles those flaps of tissue on the side of your head, then listen listen here... right now. The twelve track muck-plunging mania is just as scuzzy as the best MELVINS records and the pairing of raw lyricism and thick, driven chords brew a loud, dark, and twisted solitude. The group’s been tearing away at Toronto’s underground since 2011 and the amalgamation of releases haven’t quite developed a maturity as much as a culmination of a distinct sound. The record sees HSY maturing into their full potential while grappling with higher concepts, both musically and lyrically. With gritted out progressions getting more and more abrasive and hurried as the album inches forward, you’re ultimately left with a disheveled-yet-cohesive mess on the floor. It’s a dark anxiety that pushes a healthy, cathartic response.Besk’s seamless blend of hardcore, noise, metal, industrial and post-punk elements wrap inside a parasitic underbelly. Despite a very noisy, and sometimes busy mix, vox/guitarists Anna’s and Jude’s (both mononymous) voice ring through like a clouded atmosphere hellbent on narrating your latest nightmare. Jagged melodies turned into abrasive story-telling jab your gut. Fans of Nashville punk four-piece NOTS (also EB faves) take note as Anna’s vocals match pretty similarly in tonality and aggression to the trio’s double x vox. HSY recently opened with the sludge forefathers OLD MAN GLOOM in Toronto along with MARE on their recent tour, and you should kick yourself in the head with a boot if you missed out on that, Toronto readers (one love, though, for reals). Although GLOOM’s recent tour did stop here at everyone’s objectively favorite punk rock bar (see Chicago Reader and Buzzfeed if you think we’re wrong), HSY weren’t apart of the night’s beastly bill. Having last visited our beer soaked floor in November of last year, the four piece HSY keep on keepin’ on and we’re thankful as hell for this solid release.----------Words by Alex Conover
Fresh off the start of their Negative Qualities tour, SINGLE MOTHERS came through Chicago with one intention: To tear apart our cold ass winter and leave us in a sweaty pile on a beer-soaked floor. Making rounds with fellow Canadian punks THE DIRTY NIL, SINGLE MOTHERS outperformed their last Chicago show, despite a few sound issues, and the crowd’s response was still a perfect parallel to the blood and sweat that was left on the stage. The show’s adversity isn’t new to the London, Ontario natives either; with break-ups and members leaving since conception, these Canadians aren’t afraid to roll through the punches. The core seems healthier than ever and their debut LP is the only proof you need.

Frontman Drew Thomson has developed an uncanny ability to walk a fine line between wearing heart on his sleeve and not giving a shit what you think. The in-your-face commentary about girls, pretentious attitudes, drugs and anger all with a nice, healthy twist of sarcasm, cynicism, and an overall sense of jadedness that one acquires with age and emotional pouring shows just how much these guys put on the table. Thomson's lyricism is just the face of their gritty punk instrumentation, swamped by lo-fi guitar work, abrasive drumming, and a pace that beckons your mosh boots; this is a brand of hardcore/garage punk you don’t want to miss out on. There’s no reaching here; only straightforward amped up punk with swelled/noisy bass, distorted chords and some momentous hooks and layering. No wankery, no ostentation, just complementary grooves and riffing whilst Drew slays societal vanity.
Between the fast paced riffs and the giving-it-all, raw lyricism Drew clings to so well, these guys really do choke it all up for their ever growing audience. Still on their rise to the spotlight, Negative Qualities, the group's second official release, definitely helped put them on the map. Landing a Sunday PitchforkFestival slot, the Canadians have big summer plans to look forward to, including Barcelona’s Primavera Sound and a European tour. They’ve come a long way since first releasing their S/T EP (2011) and their raw energy still hasn’t faded in the least... Definitely catch em if you can this summer and check ‘em out now, ya dummy!
It’s always a drag when one of your favorite bands hardly gets as much recognition as you think they should. It’s even sadder when, with just two LPs under their belt, they decide to call it quits. But alas, this is the story of YELLOWBIRDS, the brainchild of astute musician SAM COHEN, who started the project recording songs in his apartment in what what he claimed was a “disparate” attempt at making music. But it evolved into much more.The music is somewhat an assemblage of all things old and good in pop music, blending folk, rock and soul in a unique psychedelic melange. After assembling a band of sit-in musicians for Yellowbirds debut album, 2011's TheColor, he was able to get a more permanent full-time cast comprised of close friends for the second. Though TheColor is certainly nothing to shake a stick at and consists of beautifully crafted songs, the chemistry of Cohen's newly assembled band on Songs From the Vanished Frontier (2013) is palpable. The songs hit harder and the aesthetic of the album is more honed.Outside of his own songs and bands, Sam Cohen maintains an eccentric portfolio to boot. He’s been a studio musician with fucking SHAKIRA, the musical director of a recreation of THE BAND’s The Last Waltz (Nels Cline of Wilco played Bob Dylan), and recently has toured as a guitarist with new found soul man, CHARLES BRADLEY. The dude plays pedal steel, for chrissake.So why are we praising this man and all the music he has made when he has hung up the towel? Because he hasn’t. Upon announcing the disbandment of the Yellowbirds project, Sam Cohen has also announced that he will be releasing a solo album in 2015. Sometimes it's true that trends in music produce exhaustingly cookie-cutter sounds, but on the flip-side, sometimes those trends can help unearth true musical gems. Electric Citizen is one of those rare gems. They pay homage to the dark, classic Sabbath-esque occult psych sound, while lead singer Laura Dolan’s seductive vocals blend some deep layers into the mix. Dolan has the perfectly witchy voice to convince you that maybe, just maybe, she actually could cast an evil, life-shattering spell on you if she wanted to. Electric Citizen's driving rhythms and use of ominous organs bring a sense of impending doom that’s all brought back to the earthly realm by the bending guitar solos from Ross Dolan. It’s no surprise how well the two collaborate given that they are high school sweethearts now-married and although Electric Citizen has only been playing together for about 2 years, it sounds as if it's been much longer.This summer the group toured with WOLFMOTHER and expanded their fan base along the way. With an authenticity to their already crushing sound, it’s no surprise they’re starting to get some national recognition. Beyond being musically talented and damn fun to listen to, Electric Citizen is the whole package. Everything from their endless collections of fringed jackets and suede vests to the artfully-mixed sound with a few pops and a little hiss here and there, they feel finely aged and genuine. Seeing them play live is no different. They’ve got an ability to transport their audience and you definitely want to catch them live if you get the chance.“Light Years Beyond," from their debut album, Sateen, is the kind of song that should be listened to at top volume while on psychotropic drugs and riding on the back of a motorcycle. It’s got incredibly heady effects of badassery that wash over as the guitar riffs wind themselves around you. Japanese track maker/DJ/painter (his self-ascribed titles) FOODMAN(aka Shokuhin Maturi) is one of the big players in Japan's footwork scene. He put out his 24-track tape「IROIRO」on Oklahoma's Digitalis label last year and a 19-song release on Birmingham, Alabama's Noumenal Loom in May. "We all want to ride this ride forever, throwing hands toward the sky hoping for lift-off that never comes," Digitalis says of the producer's music.
FOODMAN has even been covered by the Chicago Reader (back in 2013). The local rag's Leor Galil wrote about the rise of juke and footwork in Japan for that year's Best of Chicago issue and featured FOODMAN in a blog post some months later. Says Galil of 「IROIRO」, "The jarring, stuttering vocal sample that's usually part of the musical tapestry of a footwork song takes precedence on 'Otoufu Yasan,' while its rapid-fire beat is chopped up and muted till it sounds like a series of light taps resembling Morse code." Chicago has obviously been on the cutting edge of Footwork since its inception. The genre continues to rise in popularity around the world, especially with the sad and untimely death of local hero, DJ Rashad, and the ever-expanding reach of labels like Hyperdub.

Outrageously-named Toronto "noise gang" TEEN TITS WILD WIVES is a band we've recently become pretty fond of. The band’s latest release, the Street Hawkz EP, is a great example of what they call themselves: a noise gang. The five track EP runs just a bit under 15 minutes and each track has its own distinctive feel. However, the noise never stops coming on this surprisingly-cohesive effort. The opening track, “KD,” is a mostly instrumental track that could draw comparisons to Dinosaur Jr. and Cloud Nothings. The in-unison chants at the end will remind you of the children from "The Wall" all grown up and still pissed of. The final song of the EP, “Avec Cheeze,” has the feel of a noise punk band doing its interpretation of a western song that could be found on the soundtrack to a Quentin Tarantino movie. Within this mix of ever-mutating noise, TEEN TITS WILD WIVES still manage to bring in some poppy lyrics and catchy melodies.The EP is a great listen, especially if you're looking to get some anger out. Fatima Al Qadiri is a Brooklyn-by-way-of-Kuwait-and-Senegal producer who put out her most recent album, Asiatisch, on Hyperdub (home of Flying Lotus and the late, great DJ Rashad). The title of the album comes from the German word for "Asian," and, according to Al Qadiri, the album is meant to convey a sense of "imagined China," a country that she knows only through cultural representations.Al Qadiri has garnered the attention of the New Yorker, Pitchfork, and The Guardian, among other news outlets, and she's headed off on a European tour at the end of May. If that still doesn't sound like a busy enough schedule, she's also a member of an art collective that's currently got a two-room exhibition up at MOMA PS1. It’s been almost four years since the Canadian band Women (unofficially) broke up, although its various members have been involved in numerous musical projects since then. Guitarist Christopher Reimer played with the Dodos before his death in 2012, vocalist and guitarist Patrick Flegel unveiled a new project called Androgynous Mind, and bassist Matt Flegel and drummer Mike Wallace joined forces with two other Calgary musicians (Scott Munro and Danny Christiansen) to form Viet Cong.Viet Cong released a self-titled cassette in late 2013 and are supposedly putting out their debut album on Flemish Eye, though a release date has not been set. The cassette sold out quickly, but it’s set to be re-released by Mexican Summer. The group recently posted some rough mixes to their Soundcloud and if you’ve been re-playing Women’s self-titled LP and their second album, Public Strain, as much as you should be, these tracks will more than satisfy your appetite for something new. PULSE EMITTER is the solo project of the Portland-based Daryl Groetsch, who recently put out a sort of “best of” double album called Planetary Scale Synth Hypnosis. That title pretty accurately describes Groetsch’s sound -- his music will definitely take you on an interstellar voyage filled with lots of synth. Crooks on Tape is comprised of John Schmersal, Rick Lee, and Joey Galvan. Schmersal and Lee have been playing music together for sometime now, both being members of the now-defunct Enon. Their first album under the new moniker, Fingerprint, came out in late October 2013 on Misra Records. The record is a great mix of instrumental noise- and post-rock with straightforward indie-rock songwriting and pop sensibility. There is fluidity and balance to the album that typically only comes from seasoned veterans like these dudes. French visual artist and musician Felicia Atkinson put out her LP Visions / Voices on Mexican label Umor Rex last year, culling together more than three years of work into one cohesive album. Atkinson has said that she makes her recorded music by rearranging improvised pieces, a technique that’s definitely evident on the intricate, layered tracks of Visions / Voices.Atkinson’s a busy lady: She paints, sculpts and co-runs the independent publishing company Shelter Press, which releases books, artwork and records from artists like Pete Swanson, Ben Vida and Keith Fullerton Whitman. With a sound that is best described as post-hardcore meets experimental jazz, Bars of Gold from Detroit are making that depressingly bankrupt city seem rich with their emotionally driven records and live shows. Made up of former members of Wildcatting and Bear vs. Shark, the band has created a loyal following in Detroit. The group formed in 2009 and has put out 2 full-lengths. Their latest LP, Wheels, was released October 2013 under Bellyache Records and recorded at High Bias Recordings in Detroit.Despite their drummer living in Virginia, the band has been able to play a number of shows in their hometown. Bars of Gold will play this weekend in Hamtramck, MI for the First Annual Hamtramck Music Festival, so if you are in the area go check em out. Caroline Teagle and Zachary Zierden, the duo behind Imperial Topaz, have been making quite the splash with their debut album Full of Grace, which was released in Februrary on Teagle’s brother’s label, Tranquility Tapes (Teagle also does the squiggly Keith Haring-esque artwork for most of their releases).Teagle has said she’s inspired by French no-wave singer Lizzy Mercier Descloux and the Slits’ Ari Up, which helps explain Imperial Topaz’s earlier, dub-inspired tracks. These days, however, the group’s music has a much dreamier, poppier feel. Imperial Topaz used to consist of Teagle and Jake Pepper, but when Pepper left (he and Teagle apparently went through a nasty breakup), Teagle changed the group’s sound and took things in a more New Age-y direction. It’s an interesting break from the label’s mostly pure-ambient stuff.Apparently, “imperial topaz” is different than just regular topaz, because of its color, and it’s maybe more rare, and it comes from Brazil, usually? It also allegedly has healing properties and can do wonders for your gallbladder and kidneys! Who knows. EARTHEATER is the solo project of Alexandra Drewchin, who, in addition to being the possessed vocalist/frontwoman for Guardian Alien, is also a visual artist, a DJ, a dancer, and occasional model. And you thought you were busy...Based in a little town called New York City, Drewchin released an Eartheater 7-inch in August 2013, and it was recorded in Adrian Grenier’s Brooklyn studio, The Wreckroom. (Yes, the Adrian Grenier who is currently filming the “Entourage” movie, whatever!) Call Me Lightning have a new album called Human Hell and it's really fucking good. The Milwaukee three-piece has blown us away in the past, particularly with 2010's When I Am Gone My Blood Will Be Free, and it almost seems like they've out done themselves with this, their fourth record. It's being released in March on Minneapolis label 25 Diamonds, but wouldn't ya know it, you can listen to it right now via Bandcamp. We've made it easy for you - by embedding it in this post.Human Hell shares a similar sound with Call Me Lightning's last album. It's big and boomy and the band's anthemic songs move even further away from the vicious post-punk of their first two records without losing any of the bite. People will probably compare it to The Who, just like When I Am Free..., and that's probably cause it sounds like it should be played in a stadium rather than a divey rock club. Electronic composer/pioneer/trailblazer Laurie Spiegel has racked up quite a few impressive accolades over the course of her extensive career. Some of her work is on a record that’s been floating around outer space on board an unmanned spacecraft since 1977. In the event that the spacecraft runs into other forms of life, the record will prove the existence of intelligent beings on some distant planet. Her music (along with a bunch of people saying “Greetings” in a bunch of different languages and some recordings of hyena noises) is basically going to represent all of mankind.Also, a snippet of her track “Sediment” was used in the first Hunger Games movie, but you shouldn't associate her music with children killing other children. Instead, take a gander at this extensive list of resources she’s put together about animal welfare (Ferrets! Primates! Rodents!).Luckily for those of us on earth, Spiegel’s masterful album The Expanding Universewas reissued on vinyl a few years back, with loads of previously unreleased material. Most people reading this probably have a good number of records. Nice job, guys – you did it. Protomartyr is a band from Detroit who sound a hell of a lot like a band from Detroit. You can throw out terms like "punk" or "garage-rock" to describe their sound, even "post-punk" or "indie-rock," but none of those wimpy terms do the band justice. No, Protomartyr is a beast all its own, mashing each of those genres into something thrilling and unexpected."Scum, Rise!" is the first single off of Protomartyr's sophomore LP, Under Color of Official Light, out April 8 on Hardly Art. The song's jagged, reverbed-to-hell guitars and complex, urgent drumming collide with a hefty dose of feedback, all while singer Joe Casey's drawling snarl details the darker, scarier sides of his crumbling hometown.
