Fact: STOMATOPAD is the name of a “superpowered-punching mantis shrimp.” It’s also a grunge revival power trio from the Chicago underground. STOMATOPAD, formed in 2013, features ELLIOT DICKS (NERVES, #1 sound dude) on drums, audio engineer LIZ BUSTAMANTE on bass and JOHN HUSTON (PAWNER’S SOCIETY) on vocals and guitar. Together, this band lives by the mantra “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?” They play true to the classic, moody post-punk and grunge of the 80s and 90’s, channeling bands like MUD HONEY and MATERIAL ISSUE. Their debut LP, Air By The Ton, received lots of love from the Chicago Reader, Midwest Action and Hellride Music among others. Also joining us this evening is THE RUTABEGA, the Indiana carp rock duo of JOSHUA WAYNE HENSLEY and GARTH MASON. If you’re wondering what carp rock, it’s kind of like sad, indie-blues inspired rock ala ELLIOT SMITH and BUILT TO SPILL. Get ready to feel some things. Since they began in 2011, THE RUTABEGA has played a bundle of shows (mainly Midwest, but also venturing to the coasts), recorded live sessions with DAYTROTTER and WPRB's Jon Solomon, and released a 2013 full length, Brother The Lights Don't Work. Their new 7", Shiny Destination, was released on Triple Eye Industries this past March. Opening this eveing is THOUGHTS DETECTING MACHINE, the music moniker of RICK VALENTIN (POSTER CHILDREN, SALARYMAN). VALENTIN is from Normal, IL, but his electronic side project is anything BUT normal. This dude builds songs using looped guitars, vocals and electronics. One man band – how dope is that?
