U.S. GIRLS is the musical moniker of Illinois-born, Toronto-based artist MEGHAN REMY. Known for her large, distinctive vocals, challenging sound work, and creative set-ups, REMY has been recording and touring since 2007. She has released a handful of original records on various labels, including: Siltbreeze, Kraak, FatCat and her own Calico Corp. imprint. While each album shows growth both in vocals and style, Remy's vision consistently rings loud and clear. Her outspoken themes explore abuse, gender inequality, and everyday struggles of everyday humans. These themes carry through on her latest album, Half Free, released on the esteemed 4AD label. With narratives inspired by the work of director JOHN CASSAVETES and rock god BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, Half Free is U.S. GIRLS' most realized release yet, with an intoxicating blend of thick dub flavors, wall of sound dramatics, and lush, soulful vocals Packing themes of beauty, anxiety and paralysis in the face of aging, Pitchfork calls REMY "A creatively restless, audacious voice" and we're honored to welcome her back to our stage tonight. Local trio-turned-duo MAYOR DALEY returns to grace our stage with their doomy, distinctly apocalyptic noise-rock that shatters ear drums and rattles insides. We've been delighted to watch them develop over the last few years and they've blown away our packed room numerous times, most recently opening for REMY's husband SLIM TWIG back in September. In the immortal words of the Chicago Reader, witnessing their lurching, eerie and sludgy rock live "feels an awful lot like cheating death." GEL SET is the solo project of Chicago musician LAURA CALLIER, a young lady who's filled these old walls with her hazy, spacey, and sparse minimal synth jams many a time before. This past Summer we helped CALLIER celebrate the release of her new LP, Human Salad, out on Chicago's own Moniker Records. Though a casually disturbing title, there's no denying that Human Salad is aptly named – like the best salad, GEL SET's newest effort combines the best colors and tastes of dark electronic music to surprise and stupefy its listener, and CALLIER's rhythmic mastery ties everything together. As serious as it's lyrics are, Human Salad is one of the most fun darkwave records we've heard in a while, with hip-shaking backing tracks complimenting CALLIER's haunting vocals. In the words of her label, "This salad shakes!"
