Mon July 20, 2015 9:00 pm Free Monday
Tonight's balmy Free Monday brings a bunch of old pals back to our stage and their sets will surely have you leaving in a sweaty mess as you bike your ass home at 1am. St Louis via Chicago-based duo SLEEPY KITTY return to headline the night, bringing their grungey, garagey pop that's chock full of chugging drums, crunchy guitars and catchy vocal melodies that harken back to 1960s girl groups. Brooklyn Vegan called the two-piece "a grungier and more layered BEST COAST" and it's always astounding to witness how much noise can come from these two friendly Midwesterners. Fronted by singer-guitarist PASTY FACE, Chicago rock trio BEAT DRUN JUEL (pronounced "bEEt drUHn jOOl) combine sultry vocals, slashy guitar, and gigantic bass riffs to make dark, blistering pop. PASTY's raw, emotive style blends 50s pop crooning with dissonant 90s fretwork. Ripping counterpoint by bassist JESSE GIALLOMBARDO (THE PAVER) and drummer RYAN MIERA (THE LIMBOS) give the group a postrock sound. The trio formed in late 2013 and the name comes from the title of a self-released cassette by MAR-TIE, the avant-garde grandpa. BOW&SPEAR are two dudes and a dudette and a soon to be unknown-gender-person that play bad music too loud in small spaces. Well, here's a big(ish) place for them to do it, and a big(ish) place for you all to enjoy it. Kicking off tonight's Free Monday is Chicago's BEASTII, a new-ish experimental rock/folk trio who's songs will explore the deepest caverns of your eardrums. Bring a headlamp, y'all - safety first.
