Coming in hot for their Empty Bottle debut is local band M O N A K R. This smooth-ass quartet was born in the grey of Winter 2014. It is a collaboration featuring SAAM HAGSHENAS and JONATHAN MARKS of HEY CHAMP, two time Grammy-nominated vocalist MATTHEW SANTOS, and DAN BRUNELLE of GEMINI CLUB. M O N A K R explores the deeper and darker side of pop music, filtered through Chicago’s R&B and House traditions. Joining the evening is TINY FIREFLIES, who we last saw back in December for their record release party, are a just-for-fun collaboration turned super-serious (but not, like, overly serious) musical endeavor. Solo musicians Kristine (TINY MICROPHONE) & Lisle (FIREFLIES) had no intention of starting a band together. They combined musical talents for a 2012 series by netlabel Eardrums Pop. The song "Don’t Wait Until I Fall Asleep" was a favorite among these series and that’s how it all started. With Kristine’s angelic vox in front of synth-centric tunage and Lisle’s melodic guitar work, these dreamlike tracks are enough to make you want to run through a meadow, in slow motion, into someone else’s arms. Fight that urge while you’re here though – there are no meadows in Chicago and it's always awkward when you act out on your urges. Kicking off the evening off is MORITAT, a hard-grooving, avant-rock Chicago trio who’s 2012 LP CLiLL BLANZIN was hailed by the Reader as “full of serious earworms.”
